Membership Competitions

Welcome to the Conference Membership Competitions.

We have a range of competitions and they include Annual Reports (Senior & Rangatahi), Tukutuku, Kete, Contemporary Maori Art (Rangatahi only), Taniko, Whakairo and Te Reo Resource Books.  There’s something different for everyone so check out the criteria below and get registered before 15th September 2019.

Annual Report competitions

SENIOR BRANCH ANNUAL REPORT CRITERIA

  1. Annual Report is prepared and belongs to a financial Senior Branch.
  2. Activities must connect to the Objects of the League. (Click here to view the Constitution – Page 2 III Objects).
  3. Must include accomplishments and financial reports.
  4. Include pictures, profiles, testimonials and stories about the impact your branch work provides.

RANGATAHI BRANCH ANNUAL REPORT CRITERIA

  1. Annual Report is prepared and belongs to a financial Senior Branch.

Tukutuku competitions

MIRIONA-UTU BUDGE TROPHY CRITERIA

  1. To weave a tukutuku panel measuring 24″ x 12″
  2. Use of customary materials i.e. natural resources and technique observed.
  3. Must relate to a kaupapa Maori.
  4. Provide a brief korero around the kaupapa.

TE ARAHINA TROPHY CRITERIA

  1. To weave a contemporary tukutuku panel measuring 24″ x 12″
  2. Use of contemporary materials and technique observed.
  3. Must relate to a kaupapa Maori.
  4. Provide a brief korero around the kaupapa.

Kete competitions

TE ARA WAHINE TROPHY CRITERIA

  1. Must be kete harakeke raw – Kete Timata.
  2. Must be weaved by a beginner weaver.
  3. Must be produced with a plaited bottom.
  4. Measurements 27cm by 20cm.

TE KETE AROHA TROPHY CRITERIA

  1. Te Kete Whakairo is harakeke, to be dyed in one colour only.
  2. Raranga whakairo technique with a whakairo pattern.
  3. Must include muka handles.
  4. Measurements 27cm by 20cm.

TE KETE AROHA TROPHY CRITERIA

  1. Te Kete Whakairo is harakeke with use of customary or contemporary dye.
  2. Can be adorned with natural resources ie. kiekie, pingao, kuta.
  3. Created with raranga whakairo techniques.
  4. Measurement 27cm by 20cm.

Rangatahi Contemporary Maori Art competitions

TE NGIRA O PAKOWHAI INTERMEDIATE TROPHY CRITERIA

  1. For ages 10 to 12 years. Photograph of artist must accompany item.
  2. May use any type of resource.
  3. Art must reflect kaupapa Maori, providing a brief korero around the kaupapa.
  4. No size limit and open criteria.

TE NGIRA O PAKOWHAI RANGATAHI TROPHY CRITERIA

  1. For ages 13 to 15 years. Photograph of artist must accompany item.
  2. Art to be 2 or 3 dimensional.
  3. Art must reflect kaupapa Maori, providing a brief korero around the kaupapa.
  4. No size limit and open criteria.

HINEMOA PANIORA TROPHY CRITERIA SPACING

  1. For ages 15 to 18 years. Photograph of artist must accompany item.
  2. Art to be 2 or 3 dimensional.
  3. Art must reflect kaupapa Maori, providing a brief korero around the kaupapa.
  4. Size limit must be A3 size.

Taniko & Whakairo competitions

JOAN WALMSLEY CUP CRITERIA

  1. To weave a Taniko piece unlined.
  2. Use traditional Taniko techniques.
  3. The Taniko will incorporate the use of at least three colours.
  4. The Taniko has no size restrictions.

SIMON SNOWDEN MEMORIAL TROPHY CRITERIA

  1. Produce a Toi Whakairo art piece (carving).
  2. The Toi Whakairo is created from wood, stone or bone.
  3. The Toi Whakairo reflects the League Motto.
  4. The Toi Whakairo is free standing.

IKAROA TROPHY 0-2 YEARS CRITERIA

  1. The pukapuka is written in Te Reo Maori.
  2. The pukapuka has the title, author and illustrator details on the front cover.
  3. The kaupapa must reflect “Whanau”
  4. Must be 8 pages excluding the Title Page.

IKAROA TROPHY 3-5 YEARS CRITERIA

  1. The pukapuka is written in Te Reo Maori.
  2. The pukapuka has the title, author and illustrator details on the front cover.
  3. The kaupapa must relate to “Whakapapa”.
  4. Must be 10 pages excluding the Title Page.

TE KAHU O TE MATURANGA TROPHY 6-9 YEARS CRITERIA SPACING

  1. The pukapuka is written in Te Reo Maori.
  2. The pukapuka has the title, author and illustrator details on the front cover.
  3. The kaupapa must relate to “Paptuanuku and Ranginui”
  4. Must be 8 pages excluding the Title Page.
